60 Years of the Wilhelm Scream

Description

It has been referred to by a fellow Deeve as a "meme older than the Internet," and rightfully so, because that legendary sound bite turns SIXTY during 2011.

The first sound of it, among six different screams recorded, was in a 1951 Gary Cooper film, Distant Drums, but it got its name two years later, in a 3-D film, Charge at Feather River, where a Lt. Wilhelm gets shot in the leg by an arrow.

It was used here and there for a couple of decades, but it was probably at the time of the original Star Wars (1977) that it started really getting attention. Any George Lucas film since then just HAD to have it, thanks to sound editor Ben Burtt, and it has also spread to TV, video games, and even music, like this one: [link]
Incidentally, I found that song in iTunes, so you're likely to find it on other MP3 sites, too, I'll bet!

Go ahead, browse through your video library. Chances are, you may have a few films with that scream already!
